The Panchang (पञ्चाङ्ग)
The Hindu lunisolar calendar: five limbs of time
The Panchang is one of the most sophisticated timekeeping systems ever developed. Unlike the Gregorian calendar which tracks only the solar cycle, the Panchang simultaneously tracks five (pancha) elements (anga) of time. Most Hindu festivals are tied to specific combinations of these elements, which is why their Gregorian dates shift each year.
Lunar day: there are 30 tithis in a lunar month, each approximately 19-24 hours long. Most Hindu festivals are fixed to a specific tithi rather than a Gregorian date, which is why they shift each year.
Day of the week. Each day is ruled by a planet: Sunday (Sun), Monday (Moon), Tuesday (Mars), Wednesday (Mercury), Thursday (Jupiter), Friday (Venus), Saturday (Saturn).
Lunar mansion: the 27 segments of the sky through which the Moon passes in a month. The Moon's nakshatra on a given day influences auspiciousness. Births and marriages are often timed to favour certain nakshatras.
One of 27 yogas calculated from the combined position of the Sun and Moon. Some yogas are highly auspicious (Siddha, Amrita) while others are inauspicious (Vyatipata, Vaidhriti). Muhurta calculations use yogas to select auspicious times.
Half a tithi: there are 11 karanas, cycling through the lunar month. Karanas are used in fine-grained muhurta (auspicious timing) calculations for weddings, business starts, and travel.
The Six Seasons (षड् ऋतु)
Where the Gregorian calendar has four seasons, the Hindu calendar recognises six Ritus, each spanning two lunar months. The Ritu system reflects the Indian subcontinent's distinct monsoon, pre-winter, and intense summer phases.

Month-by-Month Guide
A month for inner contemplation and pilgrimages. Makar Sankranti marks the sun's northward journey (Uttarayan), one of the few Hindu festivals tied to the solar calendar rather than the lunar. The sesame-jaggery sweets exchanged on this day carry the message: speak sweetly and think sweetly.
Bathing in holy rivers during Magha is considered supremely meritorious. The Kumbh Mela, the largest peaceful gathering of human beings on Earth, takes place on the Maghi Purnima when planetary alignments are most auspicious. Basant Panchami heralds spring with yellow flowers and kite flying.
Phalguna ends the Hindu year with the joyful abandon of Holi. On Holika Dahan, bonfires are lit to burn away the ego and evil represented by the demoness Holika. The following morning, people throw coloured powder and water, celebrating spring, love, and the equalising power of colour.
The first month of the Hindu new year in the Vikram Samvat calendar. Ugadi and Gudi Padwa mark new beginnings across different regions. Ram Navami celebrates the birth of Lord Rama, the embodiment of dharma. Chaitra Navratri's nine nights honour the Goddess in her nine forms.
Akshaya Tritiya, falling in Vaisakha, is considered one of the most auspicious days of the year; any beginning made then is said never to diminish. The full moon of Vaisakha marks the birth, enlightenment, and Mahaparinirvana of the Gautama Buddha, the triple anniversary revered as Vesak across the Buddhist world.
The peak of summer heat. Ganga Dussehra celebrates the descent of the sacred river Ganges to Earth, and bathing in any river on this day is considered deeply purifying. Nirjala Ekadashi, the most austere of the eleven Ekadashis, is observed with a complete fast from water, a test of spiritual discipline.
Guru Purnima falls in Ashadha, the full moon dedicated to honouring one's spiritual teacher, traced to the day Veda Vyasa was born. Rath Yatra in Puri draws millions to witness the chariot of Lord Jagannath. Deva Shayani Ekadashi marks Lord Vishnu's four-month cosmic sleep.
The holiest month of the year for Shaiva devotees; every Monday of Shravan is especially auspicious for Shiva worship and fasting. Millions of Kanwariyas walk hundreds of kilometres to carry holy Ganges water to their local Shiva temples. Raksha Bandhan celebrates the bond between siblings: sisters tie the rakhi thread of protection on brothers' wrists.
Ganesh Chaturthi brings ten days of joyous celebration of Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles. Nowhere is it more spectacular than in Maharashtra, where millions install Ganesha idols and immerse them in the sea. Onam, the harvest festival of Kerala, coincides with this season, a ten-day celebration of prosperity and the mythical return of King Mahabali.
Sharad Navratri, nine nights of worshipping the Goddess in her nine forms, culminates in Dussehra/Vijayadashami, celebrating Rama's victory over the demon Ravana and Durga's slaying of the buffalo demon Mahishasura. Effigies of Ravana are burned across India as symbols of the triumph of dharma. The Sharad Purnima full moon is celebrated overnight with moonlit festivities.
Considered by many the most sacred month of the year. Diwali, the Festival of Lights, falls in Kartik on the new moon, celebrating Rama's return from fourteen years of exile and honouring Lakshmi, goddess of wealth and prosperity. Lord Vishnu wakes from cosmic sleep on Dev Uthani Ekadashi. Kartik Purnima sees the ghats of Varanasi illuminated with thousands of lamps.
In the Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna declares: 'Among months, I am Margashirsha.' Gita Jayanti marks the day the Bhagavad Gita was spoken by Krishna to Arjuna on the battlefield of Kurukshetra. The month is considered especially ideal for meditation, study of scripture, and worship of Vishnu.
